Insects compromising our habitat, resources and health
The insects species classified as pests are arguably masters when it comes to exploiting human activity, harbourage and food resources we “provide”.
In addition, certain insects can attack man or harm health and had an enormous impact: many diseases are transmitted by insects, for example malaria, plague and typhus.
Insect pest species are roughly categorized as follows: flies (diptera), cockroaches (dictyoptera), biting insects, wasps, ants and bees (Hymenoptera), mites (Acari), stored product insects, textile pests and nuiscance insects.
The Food Hygiene (UK) regulations 2006 makes it clear that foods must be protected from insect pests and that adequate control procedures must be present in the food related industry.
